09 10 2015 37 By Daniela Hoffmann SAP PLM Modern PLM software has to support the development of smarter IoT ready products says Thomas Ohnemus vice president industry cloud at SAP That means that it must support systems en gineering and offer a holistic view of all product data In 2015 new functionality and expanded applications are planned Examples new functions in ideas manage ment with SAP Innovation Management 2 0 and new versions of existing software for portfolio and project planning and product lifecycle costing Dassault Systemes We re assuming that in addi tion to new technical areas such as systems development test and validation more and more operational company divisions will use PLM func tions to push innovation and meet business and product goals says Olivier Sappin vice president transporta tion and mobility at Dassault Systemes He predicts that carmakers will use more cloud based services and will have growing needs for big data analysis tools Earlier this year the company released a new version of its 3D Experience platform that can be used on premises and in the cloud Siemens PLM Software The focus at Siemens lies on the early phases of product de velopment Hence requirements management and sys tems engineering are targeted In the next phase of the product lifecycle stands the trend toward virtual valida tion and simulation along the PLM process says Harald Gmeiner manager business development automotive at Siemens Industry Software To achieve real savings the software needs to be capable of checking the virtual prototypes against the requirements regularly he adds Siemens is working toward a so called digital twin ap proach which connects design and manufacturing in the real and the virtual world PTC How a product is developed takes its cue from how these products are used operat ed and serviced says Michael Sauter PTC s senior vice president sales for Central North and Eastern Europe Last year the company introduced systems engineering software that makes it easier for development teams to see a product as part of a holistic system At the moment PTC is developing new software that better understands how products perform and how they are used That would allow more proactive service offerings and better product development methods Here is what the leading PLM companies are planning this year NEWS IN BRIEF NEWS IN BRIEF NEWS IN BRIEF Study Europe has a big data problem A mere 13 percent of European industrial companies have incorporated big data anal ysis as a standard part of their business processes A study by the Business Applica tion Research Center BARC found that North American companies are far ahead of Europe twenty eight percent of them use big data analysis regularly the consultants found If pilot projects are included more than 50 percent of North American compa nies are using big data analysis compared with 39 percent in Europe According to the BARC study the main problem in implementing big data tools lies in a shortage of qualified personnel Many com panies told the consultants they have plans to fill this gap by hiring more qualified people BARC noted however that given the high demand for these experts there likely aren t enough of them at the moment Data protection and data security were also cited as problems in implementing big data projects In companies that are already conducting big data analysis the consultants found that top management was most often the driving force behind these initiatives North America is ahead of Europe in using big data tools Ph ot o K ar ls ru he In st itu te o f T ec hn ol og y K IT STORY
