09 10 2015 29 Two further thoughts a positive and a negative one On the plus side the electronic amplification makes the 3 cylinder engine sound absolutely fantastic If you want to feel like a racecar driver putting the i8 in performance mode and step ping on the gas will do the trick On the minus side the i8 s battery never fully recharges without plugging it in And find ing a charging station if you don t have one at home continues to be a challenge That means many drivers will miss out on some of the obvious advantages of the electric motor It s not a BMW specific issue Electric vehicles are having a hard time in general and sales are way behind target So what do you get when you buy a 135 000 euro BMW i8 You get a great looking and fun sports car with all the qualities you would expect from a BMW You also get what BMW calls sporting mobility without having the feeling that you re de stroying the environment Whether a rumored i9 will be able to offer even more power on the same compact car terms re mains to be seen Story photos by Arjen Bongard Here are some personal observations on the car This is definitely a BMW Everything looks and feels BMW from the handling to the excellent seating position to the behavior on the road to the delicate leather interior The use of carbon fiber for the passenger cell makes the car light enough to offer sports car performance with a small engine The i8 s design is spectacular and even after a year it still attracts tons of admiration everywhere it is seen The doors which open vertically even make the i8 look good when you re getting in or out This is not a family vehicle The two rear seats actually work for short distances but the trunk space is ridiculous It s really a two seater Golf bags can probably fit in the rear seats but little else can be packed Minor niggles The lower part of the head up display is hard to see in some sitting positions The side windows don t retract all the way into the doors which means you cannot lean an elbow out the window Entering and leaving the i8 requires some practice it s hard for the over 50s And because of the i8 s low ground clearance I couldn t get it into my underground parking without scratching the underside STORY
